‘previewed’ displays photography from Vienna. Photography from all 39 graduates of the four relevant schools of art photography in Vienna during the 2010 school year. Presented in four volumes, this work combines the diploma theses of photography classes from the two major art universities, the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Applied Arts, as well as the fotoK-course and project work of the School of Art Photography. Photography that is usually seen for several days in wonderful exhibitions, partially found on various websites, in some cases reviewed in journals of the arts and culture. Photography, whose selective visibility makes it so it (still) cannot rely on the communication and marketing channels of the art world. Thus it happens again and again that impressive projects are often seen only very briefly in the public and then disappear again in a folder or on a computer drive. It needs not be said that the works presented here are worth seeing.
One needs only to glance at the following pages. Those who take the time and dive deeper into the work will quickly notice that there is a remarkable variety: exceeding classical limits of the discipline, and providing thematic heterogeneity. This versatility exists within the artistic context of a dynamic educational institution. In this respect, we have deliberately avoided the selection of works, and present them here in their entirety. In the last twenty years, four very different courses in this area have been established in Vienna. Different in terms of the formal framework – which range from the one-year workshop-style training to the classical Master Class in higher education – and different also in terms of their emphases. 'previewed’ presents this lively diversity of artistic positions in a publication for the first time, creating a new platform for contemporary Viennese photography. The reader will be offered a compact overview of the impressive output of the Vienna’s 2010 graduates in photography. At the same time, the graduates receive the potential for an interested and critical audience – even beyond the borders of Austria.
