Backlight
, Finland’s photography triennial in Tampere, is this year all about nomads and other migrants, and EIKON devotes a comprehensive feature to the festival in this, our seventy-fifth issue. Beside numerous artist contributions, Jan-Erik Lundström explains in his critical essay the significance of border crossing and examines the political situation of a united Europe that currently not only finds itself in a serious economic crisis, but above all lacks the understanding that unification also means migration and acceptance: the EU is thus caught in a conceptual dilemma as well. Continuing our series In Conversation, this issue’s interview with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui shows how fruitful intercultural dialog can be. In the work of this artist, issues such as identity, diversity, religion, and culture play a key role. And our Artist Pages in this issue are once again multicultural: in her videos and photography the Austrian-Turkish artist
NILBAR GÜRES
, tells in a humorous and imaginative way of the traditions, clichés, and fixed gender roles in patriarchal orders. She also provided the cover of this issue, and is featured in the current exhibition on view at EIKON SchAUfenster. The photographs of American artist
TAJ FORER
and those of Canadian artist
EDWARD BURTYNSKY
both explore the destruction of our planet. While Forer’s most recent series serves as a kind of visual survival guide for our post-industrial future, Burtynsky’s large format compositions present the traces of the exploitation of terrestrial resources. The Carinthian artist
ERNST LOGAR
is concerned with what is individually and collectively excluded. In his current series, he photographs spaces that are not accessible to the public. He captures bureaucratic processes of permission and thus tests the great promise of publicity and participation. Our EIKON photography competition is also about spaces, held as part of the celebrations marking the twentieth anniversary of our founding. We received several hundred submissions on
“Prohibitions in the Space of Art.”
The best among them were chosen by an international jury and shown in a prominent exhibition at Vienna’s Leopold Museum this summer. This and a whole lot more mark the exciting start of a new art season!
