Jan De Cock: Studio Repromotion 41

"The series Studio Repromotion Collage combines images of the exhibition with photographs that De Cock took in Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Kyoto. The images from the Balkan war region show buildings that have been damaged and façades that have been perforated by ammunition and/or the ruins of abandoned new construction. While at the foreground the floors of interiors can be recognized, collaged into the image, our gaze wanders through the building outward. Behind the unglazed windows and other views through the building, we see the furnishings from interior spaces, but from the rear images of nature or monochromatic, anti-naturalistic seeming colorings of the framed surfaces, which (for example in the photograph collage of an administration building in Kosovo with a sign in three-languages) also seem to protect from interpreting the image two quickly. The perforated façades, in contrast, appear in this context like an allegory on the saturation of the present with the deep scars of a past that cannot be done away with, even in a hybridized and fragmented visual space."
